Breaking The Cycle
The End Violence Project recognizes that "Breaking The Cycle" is a tremendous challenge for offenders, ex-offenders and others who are touched by violence and punishment. Currently, we are focusing our attention on two types of cycles that need to be dealt with. One is the intergenerational cycle, where violence is passed from grandfather to father to son, or to daughter. It is not unusual to seefather and son in the same prison, and it is quite possible that the grandfather had been there too. The other cycle is the personal cycle, where the individual feels trapped in the system, unable to break away from violence and imprisonment. Many people are caught up in both of these cycles.
"In this age of wonders no one will say that a thing or idea is worthless because it is new. To say it is impossible because it is difficult, is again not in consonance with the spirit of this age. Things undreamt of are daily being seen, the impossible is ever becoming possible. We are constantly astonished these days at the amazing discoveries in the field of violence. But I maintain that far more undreamt of and seemingly impossible discoveries will be made in the field of nonviolence." MAHATMA GANDHI Breaking The Cycle: Elements Of Success
From our discussions with hundreds of people in the halfway houses, including people who have successfully re-entered society, we can see that the people who are able to break the cycle are those that have a commitment to staying free for life. They have a strong commitment to living a positive life. They have a plan for their life, or a five year business plan. They have an attitude that says, "I can do it." They have an effective support group and a strong family support system. They have proper identification, start-up money and clothing. They have developed (or they have been provided with) good direction for job-hunting and schooling. These elements of success have been suggested by two graduates of the End Violence Project - Marshal Johnson and Victor Chandler. Follow the links below to learn more about "Breaking The Cycle."
